Pembrokeshire kayaking is best known for its coast: the national park lists sea caves, rock stacks, reefs and sheltered inland bays as paddling water.

The Tenby coast from a sea kayak
One trip uses sit-on-top kayaks and begins at Castle Slip, just up from Castle Beach. Sit-on-top kayaks are the easy choice for beginners: you sit on the boat rather than inside it.
The Castle Hill trip meets at the operator's building on the slope to Castle Beach, about 50 m down on the left from the harbour gate, and names Tenby North Beach, Waterwynch Bay, Monkstone Beach and St Catherine's Island as an example route. The stops can change. Single or double sit-on-top kayaks, buoyancy aids and helmets are supplied, along with a wetsuit or paddle jacket depending on the season, and dry bags are available. No previous kayaking experience is needed for the standard trip, and you get a briefing first.
Who can join and what to bring
The operator takes children from six, with anyone under 18 accompanied by an adult. One of the two trips is listed from age eight. Wear sturdy shoes you do not mind getting wet and beach clothes, and pack a jumper, a drink, a snack and a towel. Swimwear, sun protection and water are useful on warm days.
Parking in the centre of Tenby is easiest at the Tenby Multi-Storey, postcode SA70 7LT, followed by a short walk down to the slipway. Floors 1 to 3 are charged all year, at £4.50 for five hours from March to October and £2.50 from November. Allow a few extra minutes for it before your start time.
Season, weather and wildlife
Trips run from Easter to November. Rain alone does not stop a paddle, but strong wind or a big swell can mean a change of plan, a later start or a cancellation. Plans follow the tides and the weather on the day, and no single best hour applies to every date. If the operator cancels for bad weather or swell, it offers a full refund or a replacement date where possible. The Castle Hill trip offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
The coast is also a wildlife area. Nesting birds in spring and seals in autumn need space, and breeding spots on gravel beaches and in caves from the end of August to November are especially sensitive.
Kayaking compared with other ways onto the water
A guided paddle suits you if you want to move under your own power and see the shoreline close up. Our coasteering guide covers the more active option of swimming and scrambling along the rocks, with sessions from £45 to £60. For a seated, motor-powered view with less effort, see the Pembrokeshire boat trips.
